FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What type of gas appliances are available to the homeowner?  One of the most popular gas appliances is a gas fireplace.  We install a system which allows the homeowner to choose between a log lighter, which is used to ignite conventional wood fires; vented gas logs; or unvented gas logs.  There is a resurgent in gas cooking.  More and more homeowners are requesting gas cook tops and gas ranges.  Nearly all restaurants use gas for cooking because of its reliability (ability to cook during power outages) and instant on/off capability.

Are gas appliances more economical than electric?  YES.  Gas water heaters easily save the homeowner 25% on the cost of hot water.  Gas water heaters recover twice as fast as electric ones.  The tankless water heater is even more efficient. Gas dryers work faster and more efficiently than electric.  Connecting the gas grill to the house tank is a great benefit for the homeowner.  Not only is the cost less, the need to transport those grill cylinders is eliminated.  Nearly all homeowners want a gas line to their patio for outdoor grilling.

What other specials uses are there for propane gas appliances?  Gas spa and pool heaters are the choice of pool installation companies.  Efficiency and quick heating are the key to a spa heater.  Space heaters can warm even the coldest room or maintain a growing environment year round in a greenhouse or sun porch.  Central gas furnaces are now efficient and provide warm air unlike a heat pump can provide.

What about the installation and permitting?  A mechanical permit for the piping and appliance installation is usually required.  We will obtain all necessary permits and schedule inspections.  The gas piping is done in the same time frame as the electrical wiring.  The first inspection is the “rough” inspection.  The gas piping is visually inspected and checked to see it is properly bonded.  After the dry wall is in place, the inspector checks to see that the gas piping is leak proof.  The third and final inspection is done after all appliances are connected.  Again, we will coordinate the inspections for you.  Often the HVAC contractor will vent those appliances that must be vented to the outside.  We are qualified and licensed to perform the venting operation if necessary.  We are not plumbers or electricians so any water connection (water heaters) or electrical (gas line bonding) must be done by those licensed to do so.

Where will the gas tank be located?  The gas tank is usually buried and out of sight.  The tank must be accessible to the delivery truck, usually within 100 feet of where the truck can be parked.  The tank is usually leased to the homeowner. The ownership of the tank is retained by the gas company who is responsible for maintenance of the tank.
