Propane 101

SAFETY

What is Propane Gas?  Propane is safe when proper care is exercised in storage and use.  Propane is naturally colorless and odorless.  An odorant is added to the gas to provide a means of detecting the presence of propane in the event of a leak.  This odorant smells like a rotten egg.  Should you detect that odor, or suspect a propane gas leak:

  • DO immediately extinguish smoking materials

  • DO NOT operate electric switches, use a telephone, or do anything that may cause a spark, flame, or condition that may ignite propane

  • DO warn and evacuate everyone in the building, vehicle, trailer, or area

  • DO shut off the propane supply at the tank or cylinder

  • DO call your propane service company immediately (emergency service is available 24 hours a day) and the fire department, using a telephone away from the area of the suspect leak

  • DO NOT re-enter the area of the suspected leak until the gas company or the fire department has declared the area safe, and the leak repaired

What is Carbon Monoxide?  Carbon monoxide is produced when burning any fuel, such as gasoline, wood, or charcoal.  If a propane appliance is not maintained, adjusted, and operated properly, it could produce carbon monoxide.

  • DO make sure your gas appliances are installed properly

  • Do make sure they are in good working order

  • Do have them inspected periodically by a trained technician

  • Do vent your appliance to the outside

  • DO NOT vent to another room or inside the building

  • DO make sure the vent is not blocked by soot, creosote, bird’s nest or other debris

  • DO have plenty of fresh air to burn properly

  • DO have a steady, blue flame
